What you need to rent
If you rent without an Illinois boating safety certificate, the rental service must offer an abbreviated, department-approved safety course. Illinois Department of Natural Resources says the renter receives a receipt as proof of completion. You must carry either proof of that instruction or a Boating Safety Certificate when operating rented watercraft.
The rental service must keep operator records for at least one year, and authorities may inspect them. Providing false or fictitious information to a rental service is unlawful. Before departure, ask where your instruction receipt is and make sure you have it with you.
Ask the rental company or booking platform separately about its minimum rental age, identification requirements, and any additional operator qualifications. Those booking conditions are separate from Illinois certification rules. Use the boating license checker to review the state requirement, and see boat rental prices in Chicago to compare rental options.
How to get your Illinois certificate
The Illinois Boating Safety Certificate is issued under the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and is valid for life. The department offers free instructor-led courses and paid online courses. Online course prices were $34.95–$59.95 per course as checked on Oct 14, 2026.
Most instructor-led courses last 8 hours or longer and are typically taught over 1 day. The curriculum and test are written at a 6th-grade reading level. Check the department’s course information before enrolling to confirm the approved course and testing arrangements.
Students must be at least 11 years old to test. For successful 11-year-olds, certificates are mailed during their 12th birthday month. Passing the course does not replace the need to check the operating and supervision rules for a young driver.
Replacement certification cards are available online. Operators legally required to have a certificate must present their boating safety card to law enforcement upon request, and electronic display is allowed. Keep your card accessible when you take the boat out.
Visitors and Canadian certificate holders
Visitors must meet the same Illinois certification requirements, but they may use equivalent out-of-state, Canadian, or approved certificates. Illinois Department of Natural Resources recognizes boating safety certificates from other states, provinces of Canada, the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, and US Power Squadrons.
You do not need to replace a recognized certificate simply because your trip is in Illinois. Before booking, tell the rental service which certificate you hold and ask what it needs to see. If you have questions about equivalency, confirm acceptance with Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
