What you need to rent

For a rented vessel of 10 horsepower or more, Georgia requires you to watch a 10-minute boater education video and sign an orientation safety checklist before operating. The rental education requirement does not apply to a U.S. Coast Guard-licensed master of a vessel or a resident or nonresident with proof of a NASBLA-approved course from another state.

Georgia prohibits anyone under 16 from renting, leasing, or hiring a vessel of 10 horsepower or more. That restriction covers both motorboat and personal watercraft rentals. For the distinction between renting and operating, see boat rental and driving age requirements.

Before booking, ask the rental company how it provides the video and checklist and what education documents it will check. If the birth-date requirement applies to you, confirm with Georgia DNR how your rental paperwork satisfies it. Ask separately about any company or booking-platform requirements; those are company policy, not the state rule.

How to get your certificate

Complete a boat education course approved by Georgia DNR to obtain the Boat Education Course Completion Certificate. DNR says you may attend a 6-hour class or take the course online. It encourages all boaters to take a course, even when they are not required to do so.

Before enrolling, confirm with DNR that your chosen course is approved and ask about its exam and any course or certificate fee. If you need a replacement certificate, ask DNR how to request it and what proof of completion to provide.

The education requirement has exemptions for a U.S. Coast Guard-licensed master of a vessel and a person operating on a private lake or pond. Confirm your eligibility with Georgia DNR before relying on an exemption. These agency rules were checked on Oct 14, 2026.

Visitors and out-of-state certificates

Nonresidents with proof of a NASBLA-approved boater education course from another state are exempt from Georgia's education requirement. Have that proof available and ask the rental company how it checks your certificate before departure.

Canadian visitors should ask Georgia DNR whether their particular boating education document qualifies before relying on it. The stated reciprocity rule covers a NASBLA-approved course from another state; do not assume a Canadian document receives the same treatment.
