Do you need a boating license in Wisconsin?

Wisconsin generally requires a boating safety certificate or equivalent if you were born on or after January 1, 1989, and operate a motorboat or PWC. Wisconsin DNR also allows a qualified-adult accompaniment option for certain motorboat operators, but not as a substitute for a child’s PWC certificate.

What you need to rent

You must be 16 or older to rent or lease a motorboat or PWC in Wisconsin. If you do not have a boating safety certificate, Wisconsin DNR allows you to take a Wisconsin-approved boat rental course and receive a temporary certificate.

The temporary certificate lasts until the end of the calendar year in which it is issued. Only the person named on it may use it, and only for vessels that person rents or leases. It is not a substitute for a full certificate when operating a boat you own or borrow.

Ask the rental company which certificate and identification it will check before handing over the boat. Separately, ask whether the company or booking platform imposes additional age or document requirements as company policy. Use the boating license checker and rental and driving age guide to separate education requirements from age limits.

  • Under 10: may not operate a motorboat.
  • Ages 10 or 11: motorboat operation requires a parent, guardian, or designated adult with a boating safety certificate or a birth date before January 1, 1989.
  • Ages 12–15: may operate a motorboat alone after completing a course accepted by Wisconsin DNR.
  • Age 12 or older: children may operate a PWC with a valid boating safety certificate; adult supervision does not replace it.

How to get your certificate

The Wisconsin Boating Safety Education Certificate is issued under Wisconsin DNR, which lists internet and traditional classroom courses. Internet courses cost $50.95–$60.95 per course, and traditional classroom courses cost $10 per course. These fees and the agency rules were checked on Oct 14, 2026.

Choose a course accepted by Wisconsin DNR, and confirm its exam and completion requirements before enrolling. DNR says at least one boater safety course is available per county per year. For a replacement certificate, ask DNR how to obtain another copy and whether a fee applies.

You must carry your boating safety certificate while operating. Before your rental, ask which form of certificate the operator wants to see and how you should carry it on the boat.

Certificates for visiting boaters

Wisconsin accepts equivalent boating safety certificates from other states. Visitors can use an equivalent out-of-state certificate or take the Wisconsin rental certificate course to rent a boat or PWC.

If you are visiting from Canada or another country, ask Wisconsin DNR whether your particular credential qualifies as equivalent before relying on it. Then confirm the rental company’s document requirements separately. The state boating license checker can help you compare requirements if your trip includes another state.

Notes

Questions people ask

Note AIs a Wisconsin boat license the same as a boating safety certificate?

The document Wisconsin DNR issues is called the Wisconsin Boating Safety Education Certificate. The requirement generally applies to motorboat and PWC operators born on or after January 1, 1989.

Note BCan I rent without a Wisconsin boating license?

Renters without a boating safety certificate can take a Wisconsin-approved rental course for a temporary certificate. You must still be 16 or older to rent or lease a motorboat or PWC.

Note CCan an adult supervise instead of holding a certificate?

For motorboats, DNR permits operators born on or after January 1, 1989, who are 16 or older to operate with a boating safety course or while accompanied by a qualified adult. For children operating a PWC, adult supervision is not a substitute for a valid certificate.

Note DDo I need a certificate for a nonmotorized boat?

The stated certificate requirement applies to motorboats and PWCs. Wisconsin DNR says there are no age requirements for operating a boat without a motor.
