What renters need in Michigan

Ask the rental company what certificate it accepts before booking a boat you will operate yourself. Michigan calls this document a boating safety certificate, issued under the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The agency rules were checked on Oct 14, 2026.

Do not assume that renting removes the certificate requirement. Ask the operator whether any rental-specific procedure applies and what documents you must show at check-in. For a broader rental checklist, see boating license requirements for renting a boat.

Company and booking-platform policies are separate from Michigan law. Ask each company about its minimum rental age, identification requirements and operator approval before paying. See rental age versus operating age to keep those questions separate.

How to get your boating safety certificate

You can earn a Michigan boating safety certificate by completing a classroom-based, online or interactive course. Start with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to choose a course it accepts. Before enrolling, ask the course provider about the exam, completion requirements and total fee.

Michigan's agency page names the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and United States Power Squadron as offering courses from fundamental to advanced levels. Those courses may have associated fees. Confirm that the course you select meets your certificate requirement rather than assuming every boating course does.

You can replace a lost certificate. Ask the Michigan Department of Natural Resources how to request a replacement and what information you need to provide. If your rental is approaching, also ask the rental company what proof it will accept at check-in.

Visitors bringing a certificate

Ask the Michigan Department of Natural Resources whether your out-of-state certificate is accepted before operating a rental boat. Give the agency the certificate's issuing authority and tell it whether you plan to operate a motorboat or personal watercraft. Ask the rental company separately what documentation it accepts.

Canadian visitors should also confirm acceptance of their boating credential with the agency before booking a self-operated rental. Keep the legal acceptance question separate from the company's check-in requirements.
