What you need to rent
Tennessee's resident education requirement applies to operating any vessel with more than 8.5 horsepower, not just owning one. Before renting, ask the rental company what certification it accepts and whether any rental-specific exemption or temporary certificate applies to your booking.
The Boating Safety Certification of Completion is not required if an adult who is 18 or older and was born before January 1, 1989, is aboard to take immediate control. Ask TWRA how that exception applies to your planned rental, especially if you are renting a personal watercraft.
Ask the rental company or booking platform about its own identification, minimum renter age, and certification checks. Those booking conditions are separate from Tennessee's education requirement; use the rental boating-license checker and renter and operator age guide to organize your questions.
Getting and replacing your card
TWRA issues the Boating Safety Certification of Completion wallet card after you pass the exam. Instructor-led boating safety classes are listed on the GoOutdoorsTennessee Event Calendar. Ask TWRA about exam arrangements, accepted course formats, and any course or exam fee before enrolling.
The wallet card is mailed within a few weeks after you pass. A boating safety exam permit attached to your TWRA account is not proof of completion, so do not rely on the permit when collecting a rental boat.
If you are required to hold the card, carry it on your person while operating. TWRA highly recommends the physical card, though certification can also be found in the TWRA on the Go app. Ask your rental company how it checks that digital record.
You can purchase a replacement Boater Certification Card online or wherever hunting and fishing licenses are sold. Check the replacement charge before purchasing.
Visitors and Canadian boaters
Non-residents born after January 1, 1989, need a NASBLA-approved boating education certificate when visiting Tennessee and operating a boat with more than 8.5 horsepower. TWRA states the visitor cutoff as “after,” while its resident requirement says “on or after” that date.
If you are visiting from another state, confirm that your certificate is NASBLA-approved before your trip. If you are visiting from Canada, ask TWRA whether your Canadian boating education document meets its visitor requirement. Confirm acceptance with the rental company as well.
