What you need to rent

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department offers residents and non-residents a one-time deferral that functions as a temporary certificate for renters. It costs $10 for 15 days, as checked on Oct 14, 2026. Treat this as a temporary deferral of the education requirement, not a permanent certification.

Before reserving, ask the rental operator how to obtain the deferral and what documentation to bring. Ask whether it will accept your existing certification or the temporary certificate for the boat you want to operate. Confirm the paperwork before you arrive rather than assuming the reservation covers it.

State education requirements and company rental policies are separate. Ask the operator or booking platform about its own rental-age requirements, identification checks, and operator restrictions. Use the boat rental license checker to review the education rule, and see rental and driving age requirements when comparing who can book with who can operate.

How to get your certification

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department lists approved online courses and classroom courses for the Boater Education Certification. Choose a course through the agency’s approved options. Before enrolling, confirm the exam arrangements and the full course and certification charges.

If you are already certified, the agency says you can print your certification card online. Use that option when you need a copy or replacement. Contact Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for help if you cannot retrieve your certification.

Proof that you completed the requirements to obtain a vessel operator’s license issued by the USCG also satisfies Texas’s boater education course requirement. Ask the agency what proof to present if you are using that qualification. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department recommends boater education for all boat operators.

Visitors and out-of-state cards

Texas accepts boater education courses from other states if they are approved by NASBLA, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department says visitors can use a NASBLA-approved card. Confirm that your course has that approval before relying on it.

Non-residents can also use the one-time deferral described above. If you hold a Canadian credential, ask Texas Parks and Wildlife Department whether your specific credential meets its acceptance rule before booking a self-operated rental. Confirm separately what documentation the rental operator wants to see.

For a Texas outing, compare Lake Travis and Austin boat rental prices. Resolve who will operate the boat and which certification they will use before choosing a rental.
