Illinois law and Chicago water rules
Illinois law requires people born on or after January 1, 1998, to hold a boating safety certificate when operating a motorboat or PWC with more than 10 horsepower, according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The agency calls this the Illinois Boating Safety Certificate. See Illinois boating license requirements and confirm the requirements with the agency before operating.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources also says rental services must offer an abbreviated, department-approved safety course to renters without the certificate. The renter must carry proof of that instruction. Ask the operator how it handles this before choosing self-drive.
Chicago Electric Boat Company separately requires designated drivers to be 21 or older and have a valid driver’s license. It describes Duffy boats as self-captained with an optional hired captain and says no boating license is required for that option. Those are company statements, not a replacement for the state’s certificate and rental-instruction rules.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources identifies the following Chicago requirements. Confirm the boat’s safety equipment and the route briefing before departure.
- Observe marked no-wake and restricted-speed areas in Chicago harbors, Lake Michigan, and the river.
- The operator must remain sober; boating under the influence is prohibited under federal and state law.
- Carry required Coast Guard safety equipment, including PFDs, signals, and a fire extinguisher.
- Manage docking speeds and approach angles carefully under Park District harbor rules.
- If using a VHF radio, maintain a watch on Channel 16 for urgent marine broadcasts.
Rental season and busy months
Knot My Boat Charters lists a May–October boating season, while Chicago Electric Boat Company advertises year-round availability. Confirm availability for your specific boat and departure dock.
Search demand for Chicago boat rentals peaks in June and July, according to Ahrefs search-demand measurements. That indicates search interest, not a published peak-season surcharge. Ask for a quote for your exact date and duration.
Knot My Boat Charters says unsafe-weather cancellations receive rescheduling with a non-expiring credit. Review weather cancellation terms before paying, and ask who makes the departure decision.
River docks and lakefront harbors
Chicago Electric Boat Company names Marina City, City Winery, Chicago Water Plaza, and Rockwell as departure points. It also lists Lakefront departures. Confirm which dock serves the boat you select.
Knot My Boat Charters names 31st Street Harbor, Burnham Harbor, and River North Marina. Have the booking confirmation identify the departure dock and planned waterway.
