Who decides, and what you receive
The operator or captain decides whether conditions are safe; your refund depends on the booking’s weather policy. Battle Born Boat Rentals explicitly reserves the right to cancel for unsafe conditions and issue a full refund. Ask who makes that decision for your reservation and when they will contact you.
A weather cancellation can produce different outcomes, so check whether the policy promises money back or another trip. These operators describe their weather arrangements as follows:
- Boat Rental Miami: reschedule or receive a refund in bad weather.
- Tide Up Boat Rentals, Lake Travis: free rescheduling for weather cancellations; lightning or severe storms trigger rescheduling.
- Knot My Boat Charters, Chicago: unsafe conditions mean rescheduling at no additional charge, with a non-expiring credit.
- Battle Born Boat Rentals, Lake Tahoe: a full refund when the company cancels for unsafe travel conditions.
Cancelling before the operator does
Cancelling yourself can put your booking under the ordinary cancellation schedule rather than the weather policy. Before cancelling because of a forecast, ask the operator whether it is declaring a weather cancellation and which refund terms will apply.
Published notice periods differ substantially between operators. Read the deadline against your departure date, and ask how overlapping windows are applied:
- Party Miami Boat: full refund within 24 hours of purchase, or at least 14 days before the charter date.
- Tide Up Boat Rentals: full refund 7 or more days before departure; 50% within 7 days; no refund within 48 hours.
- Lakeway Marina: a 48-hour cancellation period is required unless cancellation is due to weather.
- Chicago Tiki Boat: 100% refund more than 1 month ahead; no refund less than 1 week ahead, with a sliding scale between.
- Battle Born Boat Rentals: 50% refund 7–30 days before the reservation; the full amount is charged for cancellations less than 7 days ahead or no-shows.
Check the forecast for your waters
Check NOAA National Weather Service marine forecasts for US waters and Environment Canada marine forecasts for Canadian waters. Use the forecast covering your departure area and planned route, then ask the operator how it affects the trip.
A Small Craft Advisory signals conditions that can be hazardous to smaller vessels; thresholds vary geographically. The National Weather Service issues these advisories through coastal and Great Lakes forecast offices, including Coastal Waters Forecast and Nearshore Marine Forecast products. Hazardous sea or lake ice can also trigger an advisory.
There is no precise vessel-size definition of “small craft.” The National Weather Service says operator experience, vessel type, size and seaworthiness matter when considering whether advisory conditions adversely affect a boat. Do not treat the absence of an advisory as the operator’s approval to depart.
