A captain tip of 10%–20% of the charter fee is customary according to Empire Cruises, but local operators publish different expectations. Tide Up Boat Rentals on Lake Travis expects 20% in cash. Chicago Tiki Boat recommends 15%–25% and says gratuities are not included.
For fishing charters, FishAnywhere’s 2020 article recommends 15%–20% of the trip price, while Orvis recommends about 20% for good guide service. FishAnywhere says the gratuity often goes directly to the First Mate, who may rely on it as their main compensation. Ask who should receive your group’s tip before paying.
Check whether the booking already includes gratuity before adding another tip in the calculator. ATX Boat Rentals applies a 20% gratuity fee for groups of 10 or more and/or water sports. Use the captain rental guide to understand the booking arrangement and the fishing charter cost guide to compare trip prices.
Frontier Yachting gives a crew-tip guideline of 10%–15% of the base charter fee in the Mediterranean and 15%–20% in Caribbean and US waters. These are regional guidelines from a charter company, not a single percentage for every booking. Confirm the company’s guidance when you receive your quote.
George Yachts says crew gratuity of 10%–15% of the base charter fee is paid directly and is not included in APA. Keep the tip separate from the APA line in the weekly yacht charter calculator. Its stated percentage base is the base charter fee, rather than the total after adding APA.
Empire Cruises gives a broader crew guideline of 5%–15% of the charter fee and says the tip is usually shared among crew members. Ask the charter company who collects the gratuity and how it is distributed. Do not treat captain and crew guidelines as automatic separate charges to add together.
The Miami yacht median in the table above is $3,440 for 4 hours, drawn from 3 listed prices. That is a day-charter comparison price, not a weekly yacht quote. Keep that distinction when comparing the calculators.
In the day rental calculator, the worked tip line is 20% × $3,440 for 4 hours, using the upper end of Empire Cruises’ captain guideline. Add that tip to the rental subtotal, then keep any separately quoted captain, fuel or other charges on their own lines. Check for an included gratuity before adding it.
For the weekly calculator’s worked tip line, use the same $3,440 for 4 hours only to illustrate the percentage calculation: 10%–15% × that fee amount, following George Yachts’ guideline. For an actual week charter, replace the day price with your quoted base charter fee. Keep APA separate; this comparison does not turn the Miami median into a weekly rate.
Notes
FishAnywhere recommends 15%–20% of the trip price, depending on service quality. Orvis recommends about 20% for good fishing-guide service.
FishAnywhere says tipping is still appreciated when no fish are caught because the captain and crew provide preparation and effort. Its guidance includes duties beyond catching fish, such as cleaning, fueling and hosting guests.
Empire Cruises gives a customary range of 10%–20% of the charter fee. Check the operator’s policy: Tide Up Boat Rentals expects 20% in cash.
George Yachts says crew gratuity is paid directly and is not included in APA. Its guideline is 10%–15% of the base charter fee.
