Boat types and guest limits

The table covers electric boats, pontoons, and yachts from local rental companies and charter operators. Electric boats list limits of 8–12 guests. Pontoons with stated dimensions run 18–22 feet and carry 6–10 guests.

Yachts with stated lengths run 52–63 feet, while listed yacht capacities range from 13 to 125 guests. These are separate ranges, not a promise that every yacht carries the larger group. Match your guest count to the particular boat.

Electric-boat prices list an optional captain, while most pontoon prices are self-drive only. Yacht listings mix included captains, optional captains, and captains required at extra cost. Knot My Boat Charters includes captain and crew on its 49- and 125-guest yachts; its bareboat charters for up to 13 guests allow a vetted licensed captain hired separately.

What the rental prices include

The table compares rental charges, not a guaranteed all-in bill. It contains 3 electric-boat prices from 1 operator, 5 pontoon prices from 2 operators, and 19 yacht prices from 6 operators, checked Oct 14, 2026. These are operators’ published rates, not booking-platform listing prices.

For pontoons, the middle half of prices is $350–$420 for 2 hours; for yachts, it is $1,120–$3,400 for 4 hours. These bands describe the spread around the median, not the full range. Electric boats have only 3 prices, so the table shows their low-to-high range rather than a middle-half band.

Read the hourly rate alongside the booking minimum and any duration package. Some yacht hourly rates require a 3-hour minimum. Listed extra captain fees are $75 per hour for electric boats and the captain-optional pontoon, and $100 per hour on yacht prices that specify the charge.

Fuel is unstated in most entries; some pontoons charge by the gallon used, and one yacht price includes it. Ask for a written total covering fuel, captain, fees, gratuity, and any refundable deposit. Use the calculator to split that total, and see rental deposits and damage responsibility before signing.

Illinois law and Chicago water rules

Illinois law requires people born on or after January 1, 1998, to hold a boating safety certificate when operating a motorboat or PWC with more than 10 horsepower, according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The agency calls this the Illinois Boating Safety Certificate. See Illinois boating license requirements and confirm the requirements with the agency before operating.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources also says rental services must offer an abbreviated, department-approved safety course to renters without the certificate. The renter must carry proof of that instruction. Ask the operator how it handles this before choosing self-drive.

Chicago Electric Boat Company separately requires designated drivers to be 21 or older and have a valid driver’s license. It describes Duffy boats as self-captained with an optional hired captain and says no boating license is required for that option. Those are company statements, not a replacement for the state’s certificate and rental-instruction rules.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources identifies the following Chicago requirements. Confirm the boat’s safety equipment and the route briefing before departure.

  • Observe marked no-wake and restricted-speed areas in Chicago harbors, Lake Michigan, and the river.
  • The operator must remain sober; boating under the influence is prohibited under federal and state law.
  • Carry required Coast Guard safety equipment, including PFDs, signals, and a fire extinguisher.
  • Manage docking speeds and approach angles carefully under Park District harbor rules.
  • If using a VHF radio, maintain a watch on Channel 16 for urgent marine broadcasts.

Rental season and busy months

Knot My Boat Charters lists a May–October boating season, while Chicago Electric Boat Company advertises year-round availability. Confirm availability for your specific boat and departure dock.

Search demand for Chicago boat rentals peaks in June and July, according to Ahrefs search-demand measurements. That indicates search interest, not a published peak-season surcharge. Ask for a quote for your exact date and duration.

Knot My Boat Charters says unsafe-weather cancellations receive rescheduling with a non-expiring credit. Review weather cancellation terms before paying, and ask who makes the departure decision.

River docks and lakefront harbors

Chicago Electric Boat Company names Marina City, City Winery, Chicago Water Plaza, and Rockwell as departure points. It also lists Lakefront departures. Confirm which dock serves the boat you select.

Knot My Boat Charters names 31st Street Harbor, Burnham Harbor, and River North Marina. Have the booking confirmation identify the departure dock and planned waterway.

Direct booking versus platforms

Local operators publish their own rates and set their captain and fuel rules; platforms list boats from multiple owners and add their own service fees and policies. The table above uses direct operator rates, so compare a platform’s final checkout total rather than just its advertised boat price.

For either route, confirm the boat, guest limit, captain arrangement, fuel charge, and cancellation terms in writing. Read how renting with a captain works if you do not want to operate the boat yourself.
