Boat club, rental or your own boat: what a year on the water costs

Freedom Boat Club fees depend on location, so use a local quote rather than a single national price. The calculator compares renting, club membership and owning by yearly cost, cost per outing and break-even outings.

12 outings × 4 hours · pontoon, 22 ft · Miami

$7,696

a year renting, at the median 4-hour price

  • Club: enter the initiation fee and monthly dues from your local club’s quote.
  • Owning: enter the boat price; insurance, storage and upkeep fill in where a source lists them.

How the comparison works

  • Renting uses the median day price for the boat class and place, times your outings.
  • A club spreads the initiation fee over the years you stay, adds 12 months of dues and fuel per outing.
  • Owning adds loss of value, loan interest, insurance, storage, upkeep and fuel.
  • Every default shows its source; a field without a source stays empty until you fill it.

Compare the same outings

Renting charges you for each booking; a club adds membership fees; owning adds costs that continue between outings. Enter your outings per year, hours, boat class and region in the calculator, then compare the same amount of time on the water.

The rental table supplies published rates: the US pontoon median is $600 for 4 hours, drawn from 33 prices. Rental prices were checked on Oct 14, 2026. Use the day-rental cost calculator to check extras before treating a listed rate as your total.

Enter your local club quote and replace the editable ownership defaults with your own costs. Compare the first year separately from later years so a one-time club initiation fee does not disappear from the decision.

Club fees need a local quote

Carefree Boat Club Eastern CT lists $150–$375 per month on its official page, plus a one-time initiation fee. Carefree says the initiation amount varies with promotions, while dues vary by membership plan.

Freedom figures here are news reports, not an official local price list. Southern Boating reported a $5,000 initiation fee and premium dues just over $500 per month in 2022; TCPalm reported location-based membership fees in 2019.

Ask your branch for a written quote showing initiation, recurring dues and fuel charges. Read the Freedom membership overview or the Carefree fees and rules overview before comparing plans.

  • Treat official-page rates as applying to the named location and plan.
  • Treat news figures as historical context, not a quote.
  • If a table entry is labeled forum, do not treat it as a club price list.

Ownership costs continue between trips

Owning means budgeting for insurance, storage, maintenance, depreciation, registration, towing and fuel. Keep loan payments visible too; replace every editable default with a quote or amount that matches your boat.

The insurance-provider estimate for Vermont is $250–$1,200 per year, not a nationwide premium. The depreciation guide lists 8–10% for the first year; depreciation belongs in the cost comparison even though it is not a monthly bill.

The marina rate in the table lists trailered storage at $85 per month and a harbor tow at $50 per tow. A separate marina lists four- or six-cylinder winterization at $259 per service; that is one maintenance job, not an annual maintenance budget.

Florida's agency lists vessel registration fees of $5.50–$189.75 per registration, depending on vessel size. Ask your agency about applicable fees, your marina about storage and service charges, and your lender about financing; enter fuel separately.

When each option does not fit

Owning is the wrong cost choice when your planned use falls below the calculator's ownership break-even point. Renting can become the more expensive choice when repeated bookings exceed the club or ownership total for comparable outings.

A club is the wrong fit if its reservation rules do not match when you want to go. Ask the branch about availability and booking restrictions before joining; Carefree says members pay fuel separately, while dues cover maintenance, storage, insurance and cleaning.
