How many people can a rented boat hold?

Pontoon rentals in the table above list limits of 6–13 guests. The right limit for your trip is the specific boat’s passenger and weight rating, together with the operator’s guest limit—not simply the number of seats.

What the capacity plate tells you

A capacity plate shows maximum weight, maximum persons, and maximum horsepower ratings. The US Coast Guard requires these plates on monohull boats under 20 feet, except sailboats, canoes, kayaks, and inflatable boats.

Look near the helm for a yellow plate with a silver or gray background. Boaters are legally required to obey the posted safe-loading capacities. Check both the persons limit and the weight limit rather than treating an empty seat as permission to add another passenger.

The federal requirement described here applies to monohulls, so do not assume it covers every pontoon. Ask the operator to show you the boat’s manufacturer ratings and explain its rental guest limit before departure.

For comfort, SunCatcher Pontoons suggests subtracting two people from the manufacturer’s maximum passenger rating. That is a comfort rule of thumb, not a legal capacity formula or permission to exceed the weight rating. SunCatcher describes the manufacturer’s maximum ratings as absolute safety limits, not everyday comfort targets.

Guest limits by type and length

The listed pontoon guest limits are 6–13 people across 37 listings, but length-based comfort guidance is more conservative. SunCatcher gives these comfortable group sizes: 4–6 passengers for 16–19 feet, 6–9 for 20–22 feet, and 8–12 for 23–25 feet.

Avalon’s 2022 guidance describes a 15-foot pontoon as sufficient for one to five people and recommends 16–21 feet for six to ten people. These builder recommendations help you choose a size; they do not replace the rating of the boat you rent. Compare the listed guest limit alongside pontoon boat rental prices.

Other boat types have the following guest limits in the table above. These are listing ranges, not permissions for every boat of that type.

  • Bowrider or deck boat: 4–12 guests across 7 listings; center console: 2–13 across 39 listings.
  • Wake or ski boat: 6–15 guests across 14 listings; sailboat: 4–28 across 12 listings.
  • Yacht: 2–125 guests across 48 listings.
  • Catamaran: 6–100 guests across 11 listings; party boat: 6–45 across 57 listings.
  • Fishing charter: 1–6 guests across 37 listings; jet ski: 2–3 across 23 listings.
  • Electric boat: 8–12 guests across 5 listings.

Confirm limits for captained rentals

For a captained rental, ask the operator to confirm the authorized passenger limit for the specific vessel before booking. Ask whether the advertised capacity means guests only or includes the captain and crew, and have the operator explain which authorization applies.

Do not use a broad yacht or party-boat listing range to decide how many people your charter can carry. For a larger group, compare party boat rentals by the individual vessel’s stated guest limit, then confirm that your whole group can travel together.

Notes

Questions people ask

Note AHow many people can fit on a pontoon boat?

The pontoon listings above allow 6–13 guests. Confirm the exact rental’s passenger and weight limits before choosing it for your group.

Note BHow many people can a 20-foot pontoon boat hold?

SunCatcher’s comfort guidance puts 20–22-foot pontoons at 6–9 passengers. Your boat’s manufacturer rating and the operator’s guest limit determine the permitted group size.

Note CWhat does a boat capacity plate show?

It shows maximum weight capacity, maximum persons capacity, and maximum horsepower ratings. It is located near the helm.

Note DIs pontoon boat capacity the same as comfortable seating?

No. SunCatcher says maximum ratings are safety limits and suggests subtracting two people from the maximum passenger rating for a comfortable group.
